Nellie Modimola

I am a theatre-trained actress from Johannesburg who moved to Cape Town looking for 'Behind the Scenes' experience. What I found was my calling in film. The saying 'dynamite comes in small packages' is true. I have worked on multiple long-form projects as well as commercials as an assistant director. I am very passionate about the film medium, which is reflected in the work I perform. To be an AD you have to know the logistics of how the shoot is going to run. From knowing when the cast needs to be on set to when there will be costume or hair changes to co-ordinating location moves and, most importantly making sure the shoot runs on time. With all of these responsibilities, I use my skills of being personable, an excellent communicator and someone who can get crew and cast on their side in order to have a smooth shoot.

My theatre background provides a unique and powerful foundation for a 2nd AD. I understand the rhythm and flow of a scene from a performer's perspective. This insight is invaluable when it comes to scheduling and managing talent. I instinctively know how long it takes for actors to get into character, the nuances of blocking, and the importance of creating a comfortable and efficient environment for them. This allows me to anticipate their needs, communicate effectively with them, and ultimately keep the production moving smoothly and on schedule. One of my favourite parts of the job, is when I get to dress background characters into the scene. This is exciting because I get to build a world. Seeing that world on the monitor and in action is the highlight of my job.I have a direct hand in making the scene look the way it does.

I also have experience as a packs assistant, which is a significant, but often overlooked, advantage. While the core role of a 2nd AD is logistics and scheduling, the insights I gained from working with top packs specialists go beyond mere organisation. This background also sharpens my eye for detail and my problem-solving abilities. When I'm "dressing background characters into the scene," my packs assistant experience comes to the fore. I have a direct hand in building the world and ensuring that every visual element contributes to the overall narrative. Seeing that world come to life on the monitor is the highlight of a hard day on set, and my ability to contribute to the visual integrity of a scene is a testament to my hands-on experience and my passion for creating great productions. I  have a direct hand in making the scene look the way it does, which fills my cup.

My ability to connect with people on a personal level ensures that instructions are not just heard, but understood and acted upon with enthusiasm. As a 2nd AD, my ability to seamlessly blend the logistical demands of the role with my innate understanding of performance and visual storytelling makes me an indispensable asset on any film set. I don't just manage the shoot, I help bring the creative vision to life.
